What Is Broomball?

At Coeur d’Alene On Ice, simply skating around the rink makes for a magical memory! Whether you’re cozying up in an igloo, chilling at the snack shack, enjoying a cup of loaded hot cocoa by the fire pit, or just skating across the rink - there’s always something fun and exciting happening at CDA On Ice.  It’s almost as if things at the rink couldn’t get any better...

Enter Broomball!

Broomball is more than just a game with a silly name. It’s a unique blend of hockey and soccer -  riddled with strategy and competition!  Two teams battle against each other for the most goals, but they do so using sticks with broom shaped heads to maneuver a six-inch diameter ball up and down the ice rink.  Instead of skates, each player wears regular tennis shoes. Broomball makes for a really fun group activity, and no previous experience is required!

At CDA On Ice, Broomball is offered outside of general public sessions. The rink has abbreviated hours on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day (We’re open 1:30pm to 10pm both days), which allows for some Broomball sessions prior to opening from 12pm to 1pm.  If you reserve a Private Ice Night for your group or birthday party, you can plan for a Broomball game then, too. Scheduled Broomball sessions will be posted on our website.

Playing broomball with a large team is a great way to add to the fun at CDA On Ice.  But every game has its rules! Here are some “house rules” at our hometown rink:

  • Players shall be divided evenly into two teams

  • Each team will have one goalie.

  • Goalies may not hand pass the ball.

  • Sticks must remain below shoulder height.

  • Players can knock the ball down in the air with their hands, but may not carry the ball.

  • Kicking the ball is only allowed in order to direct the ball from the kicker’s foot to their own broom.

  • The team with the most goals wins!

You’re welcome to bring any padding or protection to the rink for a Broomball game, but it is not required. You bring the players, we provide the nets, sticks, and the ball. Don’t forget to dress for the weather, and let the games begin!
